that just recently happened to me too. i asked anthony what to do and he says you should just leave it be. other people say to put sugar water on it and lube it up with ky jelly and try to get it to go back in. I ended up taking mine to the vet and she amputated it because she couldn't get it back in. it kindof just depends on what you want to do. here is the advice anthony gave me just in case no one else responds on time.

"Andrew,

Just leave it alone and it will be fine.  I've never heard of one not
going back in.

Thanks,
Anthony"

it does happen quite a bit from what i understand, sorry i couldn't be more helpful with a definate answer, this situation definately sucks and i hope it just goes back in for you. definately put him in a clean area so that it doesn't get dirty and make sure there's plenty of moisture in the tank.

That is normal.  It will eventually go in.  You will probably see him "cleaning himself" before they go in too.

It would be best to leave him be and give him time to right himself naturally. I've personally not had any experience with a male not being able to "get himself together" after the deed. If you are worried, it wouldn't hurt to just put him in quarantine and make sure that the enclosure was moist to prevent drying up.

Hey guys,

This is a natural occurance and there is nothing to worry about.? Just leave the gecko alone and it will go back in on it's own.

The sugar water method is commonly used to keep things moist in the case of an intestinal prolapse...this is not the same thing as a hemipene being out and they have absolutely nothing to do with one another.? To put it bluntly, inexperienced people (including veterinarians who are unfamiliar with reptiles) commonly get confused between the two and then pass on advice without really knowing what they're talking about.

Without getting too graphic, it takes a while for the blood in the hemipene to dissipate after the male finishes his job.? That's why it doesn't always go back in right away.? Needless to say, lubing up his weenie and massaging it is not going to help make the swelling go down.? ?Tongue

Just for the record, I've produced thousands of cresteds and have never once had to step in and do anything to get a male's hemipene to retract.? ?That said, I get at least one email each month from a newbie gecko breeder who's absolutely "sure" that something isn't right.
