I have been taking/practicing a lot with my Nikon 4800. It's a good camera, but I have found that earthtones work very good as well. Unless you are using a professional lighting system, stay away from all white and all black. My camera doesn't focus well on these backrounds, and make sure there are no reflective surfaces as this will overexpose parts of the picture. Especially if you are taking pictures at night. My camera also has trouble, at times, focusing if there is anything in the foreground. Hope this helps.
I have also found that a little double sided tape on the feet help to keep the subject still enough to make a great picture.
