So it's been a while since I've been here but I've just gone through an ordeal with my female crestie that I had to share. So a few months ago I noticed my 6 year old female crested gecko had a bizarre lump on her side, near her right rear leg, it was about the size of a pea, felt pretty hard and totally detached just under the surface of her skin. She was eating just fine, was still active and her weight was also fine. So I took her in to the vet who made an incision and popped out what looked to be a granuloma mass.  No worries, they stitched her up, gave us some antibiotics. It was cultured and came back as a granuloma, nothing tumorous, some bacteria. And all was well for several weeks while she healed. I took her stitches out once she was all healed up and then a week later noticed...the lump was back. This one didn't feel quite as hard as the other one but was still pretty firm. Took her back in and the other herp vet at the practice looked at her, opened her up again and took another mass out. This one was slightly larger and looked almost like a piece of yellow hominy. This time he marsupialized the incision so I could flush it out for a few days and gave us a second antibiotic, however a week later...mass is back. All through this, her behavior is totally normal, weight is good, still eating. Brought her back in and 1st herp vet looks at her again and palpates her abdomen and we can feel firm masses throughout her abdomen and even up towards her thoraic cavity, at this point the worry is, tumors. Vet takes another hominy-looking mass from her side but leaves it open and we just put some tagaderm on her to keep the incision clean and covered and give it another week, still giving her antibiotics. The two vets compare what they've seen on both visits so when I bring her back in to recheck...sure enough another mass at the incision site, I make the comment, "this can't be bacterial, the masses are forming too fast and she's been pumped up on antibiotics." The vet says, "you're totally right, and after talking we've concluded the only reasonable explanation for this is those masses we palpated on the last visit are infertile eggs that haven't been resorbed, the oviduct must have ruptured and they are just being extruded into her body cavity. It's crazy that they were working their way out through her skin." So the vet then proceeds to manipulate about 14 of those hominy-like masses out through the incision in her side. They certainly in no way resembled eggs, were not calcified and were of varying sizes and shape. While this is going on my gecko is understandably pissed, mouth open but doesn't even drop her tail while the vet is pulling those things out. I'm stunned that all that was going on internally yet she showed no behavioral signs that anything that severe was going on. After removing them all she lost about 6 grams.

She's doing much better now, in another week or so, she's going back in to have that crazy ovary removed. Am pleased it turned out to be something that could be remedied instead of a massive growth of internal tumors. All the techs at the vets practice are totally in love with this game little gecko. They haven't had many cresteds come through. Incidentally this gecko has never been bred nor had I ever seen her lay any infertile eggs in the 6 years I've had her.

WOW!!

I've never heard of such a thing in geckos!!

Thanks for sharing!!

I hope that you have her completely spayed and she recovers well from the surgery!!  I'd hate to think you lost her if the same thing happens with the other ovary!!

Especially since you've had her this long, and she's such a sweet, tolerant girl!!

Good luck with her!!

Please keep us updated!!

Yeah unless there's an pressing reason to not just remove everything I'll probably just have the whole reproductive tract removed. I know thats been done in other reptile species with no adverse health impacts from the change in hormone production, just am not sure if it's something that's been looked at in cresties.  Will discuss it with the vet when we go back in after she's recovered and is in good shape for that kind of surgery.
