Calcined Clay for incubation substrate ?

Tried it and HATE it.

I'll stick to vermiculite.

I have a bag that's going on sale at the next show I vend.

really....? i got some from the garden store to try..., its the same thing  but 1/4 the price

Yup-hard to keep the right level of moisture with it.

Too much and the eggs mold.  Too little and the eggs shrivel.

That was part of the problem last year when I lost all but two eggs.

Back to vermiculite, and 95% of the eggs are GREAT!!  A few molded because they were infertile, but that's all so far.

oh. i was going to try it with the SIM and EGO incubation, so the eggs wont in resting on it, they will be lifted off, my idea was that the clay would stay wetter longer so i wouldnt need to add water as often

I was using the SIM with the Super Hatch.

I filled it with damp SH too the line, and the eggs dried out almost overnight.

I added more water, and I got mold.

When I run out of room in the container I'm using, I'm gonna try the SIM with vermiculite.

If it still gives me a problem the SIM goes at the next show, too.

I have used nothing but superhatch with excellent results. I dont have to add water for the entire season, and I am pretty sure it has "saved" a few shriveled eggs (ones that were not laid in a laybox, and not found for a few days afterwards). It retains moisture very well (in my experiences at least), but isnt damp to the touch.
 I could never get the moisture right with anything else I never had a ANYTHING hatch with other mediums, after switching to superhatch ive had about an 85-90% hatch rate with my cresties (would have been 100% but a damn heat wave got a few eggs last year). All i do with superhatch is soak it in warm water for 15 min, strain it out, and put it in the incubator. it took all the guess work out of incubating eggs for me.
