Hi there

I'm from Gauteng in South Africa and looking at getting my first crested gecko next year - the prices have finally come down to a reasonable amount. But just have a few questions regarding the enclosure before I go ahead and jump in. I am a keeper who like to have natural vivs both for the pleasure of myself and the herps, and wanted to find out a few facts about the best way to set up a natural viv for a crestie. Natural vivs are still taking off in South Africa and a lot of people are scared of trying them, I try my best to break the stereo type of keeping herps in a clinical set-up here in South Africa nad slowly starting to convert a few people Grin

Who here keeps their cresties in a natural viv?

Hi, Darryn!!

Welcome to Ciliatus, and your new addiction!!!

Nice looking monitor you have there!!!

I used to keep my geckos in vivs, but once they started laying eggs, they rapidly became a pain in the behind.  I may go back to vivs for my males once I get my gecko room arranged and get more aquariums in.

Here are some links for you-in case you need vivarium help-

I hope that helps!!

That's a great pic... but I want to see the one where you try to kiss him! Wink Grin    Welcome to the group! Smiley

Just follow the links and use the search function, and you'll soon have a buttload of viv ideas...  they're pretty huge here in the states.  Don't forget to post pics of your guy once you get him!

Thanks for all those warm welcomes and thank you samanthajane13  for those links, I'll be sure to browse through them shortly. A little bit more about me, I have been keeping reptiles for well over 13 years and also do some wildlife reptile photography here in South Africa (If you all are interested I can post some pics of some SA herps for you to see). My main area of interest is lizards and amphibians but love all types of herps. Above all my favorite are monitor lizards and currently working on breeding bosc's/savanna monitors as no one has had success breeding them in South Africa yet. I also have my own ad agency and I am ashamed to admit that advertising is my first love over herps.

welcome man....P.S...I found my new herp hookup in Africa...lol, just kidding....but no, realy...
Absolutely, give us a shout when you in the South... Africa's a big place though Wink

Hello and welcome! I keep some of my cresties in a viv. If I lived in SA i'd be more into chams though!
Chams are only now becoming popular in South Africa and we have the same species on the market as you guys have: veilds (very popular), panther, carpet, a few jackson and mellers floating around. But we are not allowed to keep indigenous herps, our most common South African chameleon is the flap neck chameleon and then we have the more rare species like the dwarf chameleons which are all threatened species. I will be in the part of South Africa where there is the Natal Midlands Dwarf Chameleon (Google that name) and hopefully I'll find some to photograph for you  Wink
