Question?!
«

i am new to crested geckos but am somewhat experienced with reptiles. i own one crested at the moment and i am having no trouble with him except that he will not eat the cgd or any other non-carnivorous food that i put in to his tank. he just doesn't seem to be interested in it. i've tried cgd, organic applesauce and baby food and mixing the baby food, applesauce and cgd in different combos to no avail, but when i stick a nice big, dusted cricket in when he's up and about at night he starts on it in about two or three seconds.
so here are my questions:
why won't he touch the fruit products i give him?
is this a common problem?
will he become malnourished if this continues?
thanks

Best thing to do is back off on the bugs, and ony give him CGD. It may take a few days, but he WILL eat it! They eat very little, so it's highly possible that he IS eating what you're giving him and you just can't tell.

You only get malnourished if you don't eat. If he eats the CGD (even if it takes him a few days), he won't be malnourished. He's in more danger of being malnourished by only being given crickets, honestly. If you're that worried, why not post a picture so we have an idea of the baseline you're starting with? While most of us here shy away from "hand-feeding", you can always dab a bit of CGD on the tip of his nose.. he'll lick it off, and then you probably won't worry as much!
Just so you have an idea of how small an amount they eat, my adult breeding pairs get about 1/2-3/4 tbsp. CGD 5 nights per week. They only lick the dish clean about once a week.... most of the time they waste the majority of it (snots!).
Try mixing it a bit thick and putting it in the middle of a piece of wax-paper. Within a few nights you'll usually see their CGD footprints on the paper.
