Ok, so iv'e had my gargoyle gecko since about April and it was sold to me as a male. So after a few months i kept waiting for him to show his bulges like the cresties do but still no signs and "He" is 45+ grams now...Are Gargoyles different? Do males not get bulges? I have worked with cresteds for about 3 years now and if it was a crested i would say female in a heart beat so I don't know what to think. Is there something i missed where males are different in a gargoyle geckos or was the breeder just wrong?

Thanks any help will be appreciated

I'm very new to the world of Gargs (I got three just yesterday) but the male I purchased has a very obvious bulge.  I'm not sure of his weight but he was about 75% of the size of other proven adults he was nearby.  I'm going to be ordering a scale very soon and when I get his exact weight I'll let you know.

Gargoyles do not show sex the same way cresteds do.  Yes you can use hemipenal bulges to help determine sex, but it is not fool proof.  Honestly even preanal pores are not always a guarantee.  Some female gargoyles (I have 2) are very "pouchy" as adults, almost as much as my males, the only difference I can say is males have parts inside the pouch, and females just seem to have extra skin at the vent opening.  As far as preanal pores, they are your best bet, because eventhough some female gargoyles have what are known as "false pores" (basically they look like pores but do not excrete marking wax) not many have this situation.  I believe there is a photo and explanation in the Rhacodactylus book by DeVosjoli.  Gargoyles are definately among the harder to sex rhacs.  If you don't have a loupe to check for pores, try holding the geckos lower torso up to a flash light at and angle and see if it's shiney or waxy, then you know you've got a boy!  I hope that info is some help, good luck.

Males will always have more rows of pores than females, usually 4 or 5 rows.  They're pretty easy to sex if you know what to look for.
With an adult pair you should be able to tell by the bulge.  Females can have bulges too but males are bigger.

I still haven't purchased a scale but I wanted to get you a photo of my male for a rough size comparison.  Now, my hands are pretty small (my ring size is a 3.5) so he probably looks a little bigger than he actually is.  Hope this photo helps some.
