I picked up a couple of hatchling mourning geckos at the show this weekend...they were too cute, the price was too good, and I was too intrigued by  the whole female-only species thing.    DAMMIT!

SO, since they were a total impulse purchase (I DID ask questions!), I'm wondering if anyone out there has had any personal experience, keeper tidbits, etc., they wouldn't mind letting me in on?

Here's what I know:

*3" is about tops in size, and if handled regularly, can be fairly chill (i don't think I buy the last part!)
*kept the same as Cresteds (maybe with a tad more arthropods in the diet)
*FREAKING FAST at an inch long and about an 1/8th of an in thick!!

Anything else I should know?

I just googled this gecko to see pictures of them, because I have never heard of them and found a page from acreptiles. www.acreptiles.com/geckos_other.htm there is the link to it. Looks like Anthony has had some experience with them, and on there it says they are female only species, but the females will lay fertile eggs without a male. Hopefully this link helps you out more. Awesome looking gecko too.

I had a few, really nice geckos Wink One or two came from Anthony.  I kept them just like cresteds.  Diet of cgd and small crickets.
I dont know how accurate that was about them calming down if you handle them.  Mine went crazy whenever they saw me.

They will lay a lot of eggs and attatch them to things in the enclosure.  The babies are tiny so you will have to look close for them.

Did you get them to sell in your store?

Nah...got them for myself just to see if I could grow 'em up and get any successful clutches.  I gave them cgd fist night, and I don't think there is ANY way to know if they ate it, but I brought home some super timy crickets last night and they attacked those like little heat-seaking missiles!  They will still get cgd most nights, though.

The guy I got them from said they hatch out every 4-6 weeks, so I figure I'll make them our newest cheap gecko at the store or feed them out?  Some of our wild-caught snakes may enjoy one every once in a while.  Who knows...but they are just as freaking cute as they are fast!

I'll try to get a few pics up today.  Preferably without losing them!

Here' a bunch of pictures...

If you look really close you can see them both in some shots...one is about 1/2 the size of the other.  I need a squinting smiley here!

I googled them and checked the "availability" links on a bunch of reptile websites, but I couldn't find any.  SOMEBODY has to have them, but it may take some digging.  Maybe e-mail Anthony since he has kept them and see if he knows of anybody with them for sale?  I just found them by accident at a show...the guy had 4 hatchlings and I took the two biggest ones...he was the only one that had them.

I'm gonna scour the tables at the show next month and see if I can't find an adult or two for sale... I may not have the patience to wait for these babies to get up to size!! Miracle-Grow in the CGD, maybe?   Wink
