So, a buddy of mine just inherited about $20,000 from his dad. Or something like that. lol! Well, he wants to use this money to go into business with ME and start breeding Leopard Geckos. I am so excited! Right now we are working on getting the breeding stock and such. I'm buying some, and he's buying some. Plus the supplies and such. Hopefully things work out for us!
Also, I'm getting some new leopard geckos from FireCrested. The geckos I'm getting from him, plus the ones I already have...here is what is going to be paired up:
Leon (Murphy Patternless Male) X Sprinkles (High Yellow Female)
Gabriel (Tremper Blazing Blizzard Male) X Nicola (Tremper 66% Het Blizzard Female)
Tonka (Mack Snow Male) X Jema (High Yellow Female)
Alec (SHTCT Het R.A.P.T.O.R. Male) X Adonia (SHTCT Het R.A.P.T.O.R. Female) & Nichola (SHTCT Female)

I also have a chance to get a female Phantom leopard gecko and I'm planning on getting some cremesicle leopard geckos. I also want to get into Chinese Cave Geckos and back into Viper Geckos. Any other terrestrial geckos I should look into? lol!

Good luck Smiley.  $20,000 can get you a ton of breeders.  Are you planning on getting any Enigma leos?
I like the Cave geckos too,  I want some when I get everything else paid off.

Any other terrestrial geckos I should look into? lol!

Australian geckos?
U.milii, D.galeatus, D.steindachneri and D.dameaus are really neat looking and from what i have heard they are easy to breed.  A little pricey but they are really nice.

not when you've got racks, set-up and rent to cover.
it sounds like an awesome project, and i won't try and convince you not to go for it. (i'd be the biggest hypocrite)
just get your numbers togeather before making all those purchases. don't spend even a 1/4 of that until you've got your business plan in shape.
i do major finacial planning as my "regular" job and i'd be more then glad to help you out.

Yeah, we were wanting to discuss a financial plan for all of this, so we don't go into this blindly. It would awesome if you could help! I'd love that, and I know we need it.

Firecrested: I do plan on getting some enigmas, diplos, and probably other Australian geckos. We aren't buying just yet, right now we have to plan everything out.

Thanks!!

And .....

Start small.  Let me just give you some advice having bred many types of animals over the years.  Do not spread yourself too thin with all these species you are listing. Work with the leos. Get a few high end morphs but count on your lesser morphs for bread and butter.  You'll find that only real enthusiates will pay the prices for the higher end stuff. The average Joe -want- a- lizard is gonna be more willing to fork over $25 for a common leo. than $500 for a high end.  Then you are stuck feeding and waiting for it to sell and everytime you put a cricket into it you are losing money.

Go into it for fun!!!!  Then anything else profitwise after that will just be a bonus.

That's what I plan for  Smiley
I'll have normals and such breeding for selling to pet stores and such, then the higher ends will sell online. I know the higher ends will be harder to sell, that's why I'll have the normals and some other cheaper prolific geckos (vipers).
Thanks!

Katie-

I don't want to burst your bubble or dissuade you from going into breeding-I think it's GREAT!!

Let's compare your new business-to-be with dog breeding.

Low quality-crank-'em -out-by-the-TON breeders-like PUPPY MILLS-they have TONS of dogs in big runs-they breed at will and you never know just what you have as many of the breeding stock aren't high quality or pure-bred to begin with.  They feed low quality food, don't vet their animals when they should, and raise the puppies in mass nursery runs.  The puppies from these breeders often have genetic flaws that make them weak and sick.  They have parasites, etc.  The over-bred parent dogs get old before their time and they get sick and require vet services-or they DIE.  The pups get sick somewhere down the line, and the new owners have to have them euthanized.

They are in it for the BUCKS.  They made their BUCK by depriving the parent dogs and their pups of all the things neccessary for a long, happy, healthy  life-BUT THEY DON'T CARE.

High quality breeders use selective breeding with only PURE BRED dogs, rest their animals between litters, vet their animals for pregnancy tests, ultrasounds, EVERYTHING.  They feed HIGH QUALITY foods.  They parents are in top health, and free of genetic flaws.  They have no parasites.  They give birth to healthy pups who are well-cared for and recieve quality food and medical care.  The dogs and their pups live long, happy, healthy lives.

These people are in it for the love of the particular breeds they raise-and to keep that breed up to standard.

All vet fees, good foods, and high quality care cost money.

TRUE breeders make VERY LITTLE money from what they do.  They LOVE what they do, and they love that they are keeping a breed alive.  That's all that matters to them.

And MOST potential owners can't afford what TRUE BREEDERS CHARGE for their animals.  NOT that they're cheap-or wouldn't make EXCELLENT LOVING pet owners-they just don't have that kind of money to invest in a pet.

I know that YOU aren't going to be running a PUPPY MILL type of business.

You really have to ask yourself WHY you want to go into this, since you may NOT make a killing in the business.

Start with ONE kind of gecko.  As you make money, add a new type one at a time.  You NEVER hear of a legitimate dog breeder breeding ALL KINDS of dogs.  The MOST I've every heard of-from a single breeder who has QUALITY DOGS-was 4 different breeds.

Start small.

You have to make a name for yourself before you are going to make it BIG.

You don't want to breed more geckos than you can move, or like Steve said, you're going to be over-stocked, and feeding them is going to COST YOU.

Keep good breeding records AND GREAT FINANCIAL RECORDS.  The way the business and tax laws are changing, you'll NEED the records to be well maintained.  Find someone who specializes in preparing tax returns for small businesses.  Use them RIGHT FROM THE START, and you won't end up getting into trouble.

Keep your prices low enough so that your animals move and your prices are competitive, and you're still making a FEW bucks, but not so low that you're GIVING THEM AWAY.

And everything Steve said is TRUE.  Listen to him.

Also, you might want to ask Anthony for any tips he might have.  PM him, and see what advise he can give you.

Just be prepared NOT to make a MILLION!!!

Good luck with your new venture, Kiddo!!! Grin

Thanks! I do plan on keeping it small for now, but here are the plans for geckos I'm about to get and I'm looking for. My buddy and I are going to go to walmart soon to get the supplies for the racks we are going to build and such. He'll be keeping some geckos and such at his house, and some will stay at mine. I also decided to keep my three male cresties and find them some nice females. The females they are with now are sold and will be leaving after they lay their eggs. I'm pretty excited about that. Oh, here are the groups for the geckos this year (the leopard geckos). I only have one pair at my house at the moment (the Murphy Patternless and the High Yellow) and they breed for sure yesterday...lol! Here's what I'm planning...and yes, I'm a loser...I wrote all this out...  Roll Eyes :
