Now dont hate me for this.....

i know how alot feel about the hole chahoua X crested crosses,.....well i did something im not proud of......i few months back i got a male gargoyle and put him with a female crested...well last night i heard him sending out mateing calls, so i went overtheir with a flashlight and......well you can all guess what they were doin', the odd thing is i have been told that they dont get along with each other, but they do......is this odd?
I know you must think im the devil or playin god....ect, but im not turing this into a breeding project or selling this type of hybrid if somthing does hatch, just lance only. Im looking to see if the black and white colors or side stripes of a gargoyle will transfer into the crested....would luv to have a black and white crested or side striped crested. I was doing to take a picture, but it was 2am and buy the time i saw it thay were just about done..lp

That would be interesting to see
. I didnt think that would work. I had a friend try it a few years ago but they never bred.

It's not that it's not possible for them to breed, it's just said that it's not possible to get offspring. I don't think the species are compatible in the same way that chahouas and cresteds are. So, you may have witnessed copulation, but the real test is to see if there was fertilization. In a couple months you may find out. I'm highly skeptical and doubt it will happen, but it could happen.

I wonder if anyone else has even witness copulation? I know of a couple people that tried but nothing happened.

That's Incredible! I don't think anyone can criticize you for what you have there, gecko lovin is gecko lovin, and who are we to come between it. I hope something does hatch and you find yourself with an great and healthy addition to your collection. Best of Luck!

That's great!!!! I'm excited. I've always liked the hybrids, personally. As long as we don't pollute the pure genes, then I see no problem. Can't wait to see the babies!

It will not work with the gargs. It seems like it should but they are genetically incompatible. Same is true of many turtle species. While they look compatible (and some even look like they belong to the family of turtle) they are genetically incompatible. They can breed all they like and never produce any offspring.

i think i dont understand is how two totaly different species (crested and chahoua) can....because chahoua's aren't Rhac's, so they should be more likey to, being in the same sub-species
i know that chahoua's havent been moved out of the rhac fam., but new studys show that they arent in the same fam.i think there being moved to "a monotypic genus or Eurydactylodes which it is genetically closer to than Rhacodactylus...." quote from Allen Repashy.
I wonder if any other Eurydactylodes geckos can be bred with cresteds???

Lance to be quite honest I think most people that study this sort of thing are too detail oriented and nit picky and trying to keep changing things up (making genetic mountains out of mole hils). Frankly, if two species can reproduce and produce viable offspring that are fertile themselves they have to be closely related if not in the same family.
And you"re right it doesn't make sense. If a garg and crestie can't even produce a sterile offspring how the heck are they more closely related genetically than a chewie and crestie who not only produce offspring but also produce FERTILE offspring.
Anyone can say what they want go on and on for hours about gentic this or physical that and the facts are still the indisputeable facts.
Sorry it doesn't wash with me.

From the information on the family relationship of rhacodactylus provided in the "herpetofauna of new caledonia" chahouas, cresteds, and leachies should have the ability to hybridize, but it appears that gargoyles, sarasinorums, and trachyrhynchus are all more distantly related eventhough they are all of the same Genus. Though the only way to completely prove or disprove which are capable of breeding is to try. Take for example a mule, their parents a donkey and a horse are both from the same Genus and are in fact capable of breeding and producing offspring(sterile offspring in this case, but still offspring). All of the Rhachodactylus are in the same Genus, therefore it is feasable that they could in fact all be hybridized. Wether or not they would be willing participants, or have fertile (like the chahoua x crested) or infertile (ex. mule) will determine if these hybrids are infact a species. A mule can not be considered a species because it is sterile, but when you're hybrid is not sterile it has the ability to form a population and eventually perhaps a large enough group to be considered a species of it's own. Here's a pic to help illustrate the family relationship I'm refering to.

You'd run into genetic diversity problems though, with a small breeding group.

definately, with a small group in captivity. It would be the same as inbreeding for a specific morph. In the wild they would either fill a new niche and survive to eventually be their own population, or they would end up breeding back into one of the parent species adding new genetic material.
