I found out why my little crestie wasn't doing so well. Turns out his cagemate was just a bit too large for him and was bullying him. Sad He's gone to a much larger and roomier terrarium at my friend's, she's gonna help me purchase another one that's closer to my other crested in size. @__@ I know they can bully eachother, but I hadn't realized how big Spaz has gotten!

I'm disappointed that I won't get to keep Milk Chocolate, but s/he's going to a better terrarium. :p MC was just fine, just a little under weight, and had started gaining weight back after I seperated them. I don't have the room for two seperate tanks right now (I have 2 exoterra terrariums for frogs, a 10 gallon aquarium, and a 5.5 gallon aquarium), so I'd be happier and better off exchanging little MC for another gecko.

Putting two 2.5 gallon tanks on their ends and top to top, add some foam (for ventilation), and you have a good temporary quarantine cage. :p About 5 gallons too.

If you don't have room for 2 seperate tanks, I really don't think you should get another Crestie. What size of tank were you keeping these 2 in?

If your other gecko was bullying MC there is a good chance it might happen again, your remaining gecko might just be aggressive ... there is also a chance that both your geckos were male. I'm not sure how old/large they are now but as small as 10-12g they can start to show as male and start fighting over territory and food, in a tank there is just not enough space for them to escape eachother.

Also, if you manage to get a male and female and raise them together you are going to end up with the male breeding your female too young and potentially have to deal with those health issues, not to mention the resulting young (should you keep the eggs.)

Regardless though. IMO if you don't have the space to permanently house each gecko in it's own tank if they don't get along you shouldn't buy another one, reptiles don't need friends to be happy.

ditto. Have you run out of room? I realkly think that if possible, you should keep the gecko.

Also are you absolutely sure that the other one was bullying MC?  Did you actually see it happen?

Yes but sometimes bullying isn't something that can be seen. It's a larger animal using body language to intimidate its cagemate into giving over the best basking/ hiding spot, etc.

These guys might shake there tail a little but by and large if it is bullying it is more physical than anything else.  If the there was no fighting biting or chasing then chances are there was no bullying going on.

The smaller gecko might be intimidated by the size of the larger one but that has nothing to do with any actual intimidation on the part of the larger one.

They're both under 12 grams.

MC has perked up in another enclosure, at my friend's house. He's visibly smaller than Spaz, which is something that even now, I can't see but others can. o.O

The enclosure is a 10 gallon, with more than enough hiding spots.

Spaz is a posturer. He's tried to intimidate the Northwestern Tree frog in the terrarium next door, I had to put a background on the tank.

We're going to try housing Spaz with a slightly older female who does well in a community enclosure. Spaz came from a breeder, MC came from PetCo, which I think might have something to do with it. MC is now the second largest in a large group community, there's 5 other geckos (still juvies) in a 37 tall setup.

once sex is identifiable, they should be seperated. even the females.
while growing to adulthood they are more likely to bite and bully each other over food and terrirory. once they have grown, most of that goes away. unless you are able to provide ample space for two growing females (like 20 gallons) i would suggest splitting them up until that phase has passed.

Well, I've decided that 10 gallons is too small for my crabs, so I'm gonna get a 27 long. That'll leave me with an extra 10 gallon, and I have a screen top, so I'll be able to put one in that for a while. I dunno where the actual terrarium will go in my room, maybe it's time to get shelving.

I am short on space too. I picked up some metal sheliving that helped out tons. It isn't really pretty, but easy to put together and sturdy.

Thanks for the idea, but I think i'm going to pick up some oak shelving at a flea market or yard sale. Smiley Plus, my exoterra setups won't fit in that. Sad

this is actually only $30 in the store and the shelves are adjustable.  it will hold exo terras, even if they hang off a couple inches front and back.

hey, Julie,
i was just getting ready to put my three mostly mature females together in a 40 gal for the next couple of months.  one is 46 grams, and the other two are down around 31 or 32.  will the big one be too big?  i thought not when she was 39 grams, but she is growing like a weed, while the other two are slower.  would you suggest something smaller and independent?  (i hope not...)
thanks,

that should be a good amount of room for your ladies. i have the most trouble with those at 15-25 grams. eating and growing like pigs they are just more fiesty with each other. as always, keep an eye on the newly introduced group. Smiley
